Growing up in Wenzhou, near Shanghai, Li graduated with a BA in Chinese Literature from Zhejiang Teachers' University in 1993. Following this, Li worked for six years as a television journalist and documentary maker for Wenzhou Television. During this time she covered important events, such as the handover of Hong Kong to China.
Deciding that she needed to broaden her experience, Li travelled to New Zealand as an international student to study film studies at Victoria University in Wellington. She graduated with a Post-graduate Diploma in Film and Media Studies in 2003. During this time, she also completed a secondary school teachers' qualification. Embarking on a career as a Media Studies and Chinese teacher first at Chilton St James School, then at Hutt Valley High School, she soon realised that the students that she was meeting everyday would be fascinating subjects for a documentary. This was the genesis of the documentary Waves, a project that would take Li the next three years to complete.
Currently, Li is a lecturer in film production at Fudan University in Shanghai, one of China's top universities. She has recently published two books about New Zealand in Chinese, "New Zealand - Untouched World" and "The Diaries of Chinese International Students in New Zealand". She is currently working on her third book for the Chinese market "A New Zealand Series". She frequently travels between New Zealand and China; both she now calls home.
